Summary
A cyberattack targeting French retail infrastructure has caused refrigeration system failures at multiple French supermarkets, resulting in food safety incidents and operational disruption. The attack targeted operational technology (OT) systems controlling refrigeration rather than IT systems, demonstrating that cyberattacks against retail critical infrastructure can produce direct physical consequences beyond data theft or system downtime. The attack is the first documented instance of a cyberattack causing refrigeration failures at multiple supermarket locations simultaneously.

What Happened
Modern supermarket refrigeration systems are managed by building management systems (BMS) and industrial control systems (ICS) that are increasingly networked and in some cases internet-connected for remote monitoring and maintenance. An attacker who gains access to refrigeration control systems can disable cooling, alter temperature setpoints, or disrupt the compressor and valve controls that maintain food safety temperatures. At the scale of a supermarket chain, a coordinated attack against refrigeration infrastructure across multiple locations simultaneously creates immediate food safety consequences and significant financial losses from spoiled inventory.
The retail OT attack surface has received significantly less security attention than industrial and utility OT environments despite the same fundamental vulnerabilities. Supermarket chains managing networked refrigeration across hundreds of locations present a large, poorly defended OT attack surface. The responsible threat actor has not been publicly identified. French authorities are investigating.
