Summary
A remote code execution vulnerability in Ghostscript, the widely deployed open-source PostScript and PDF interpreter, allows attackers to compromise servers through maliciously crafted PDF files submitted via upload endpoints.
What Happened
The vulnerability resides in Ghostscript's handling of certain PDF structures during rendering and conversion operations. When a server processes a crafted PDF through Ghostscript, an attacker can achieve arbitrary code execution in the context of the web server or document-processing service, potentially leading to full server compromise.
Ghostscript is embedded in a large number of content management systems, document conversion pipelines, image processing services, and web applications that accept PDF uploads. Exposure is widespread in environments where Ghostscript operates on untrusted user-supplied files without sandboxing or input validation.
The Ghostscript project has released a patched version. Administrators running Ghostscript in document-processing workflows exposed to external file submissions should update to the patched release. Where immediate patching is not possible, sandboxing Ghostscript's processing of untrusted input is recommended as a temporary mitigation.
